media question

"Media Productions are dominated by global institutions who sell their products and services to national audiences."Discuss how far you agree with this statement.

The film industry is dominated by "The big 6" which contain The 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Disney and Columbia. These large companies then control subsidiaries with their own distribution networks, an example is FoxSearchlight. Most people go to see these films as they are advertised everywhere and also people know that they are going to have a certain standard because they have seen films by these companies before.

For my case study I chose Guardians Of The Galaxy created by Marvel Studios and its asset is owned by Disney. Their Marketing campaign included many teaser trailers towards the lead-up to their release this made the audience more keep to watch the film as it can make you want to find out what happens as the trailer could leave you on a cliff hanger or just itching to watch the film. Another way that Disney advertised their film was by installing their poster onto billboards on main roads and also they had posters inside cinemas to promote to their correct audience. This film is different to other Marvel films as there is not a super hero and all of the characters do not possess a super human power.

The smaller film that I chose was Submarine which was produced by the Weinstein Company which is an independent company, these companies usually rely on their film being picked up by its story and drama and then spread via word of mouth rather than the action and special effects that are a large factor of the films made by the "big 6" and the mass advertisement. My middle film that I chose was 127 hours which was based on a book and will attract the people who read it also the company that Distributed this film was FoxSearchlight so they can get help from their larger big brother 20th Century Fox to help promote their film.

Guardians Of The Galaxy's released a mix tape which reached the number 2 album in the UK which consisted of songs produced in the 60s and 70s, it sold over 1.2 million copies and also had a limited edition cassette tape release that was the first release of a cassette by the Disney music group since 2003. The Guardians Of The Galaxy premiere congratulated Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel on making their Marvel debut's. Their merchandise consisted of children's toys and costumes which was distributed by Disney, Lego and Marvel.
